Maui Association of Landscape Professionals
MALP's membership is comprised of landscape architects and designers, landscape contractors, landscape maintenance personnel, golf course personnel, nursery owners and staff, arborists, allied manufacturers and distributor representatives and UH-CTAHR.
MALP has five general priorities that they focus on within our organization:
  • to have the landscape industry recognized statewide as part of the Agricultural industry of Hawaii.
  • to emphasize the importance of Agricultural and Horticultural educational and training for the landscape industry workers with emphasis on safety, correct horticultural practices and water efficiency.
  • to continue to support research pertaining to the control of plant insects, plant disease and improved plant varieties.
  • to support programs that ensuring stricter inspection at Hawaii's airports and harbors to reduce the threat of alien species invasion as well as encouraging the membership to avoid planting invasive species.
  • to recognize the importance of and continue support for the Cooperative Extension Service/University of Hawaii - CTAHR on Maui.
Our main goals for 2007 are:
Membership directory
Publish an updated Members Directory (last one published in 2004) and aid in its greater circulation around the island to help connect the industry to itself and to its customers.
malp.org
Begin to create a “Go to” webpage that helps the landscaper find suppliers, horticultural information, MALP news and events as well as other green Events around the island and Hawaii. Help the public find MALP members and creates awareness of our organization and industry.
Educational Meetings, Workday and Field Trip
The board would like to focus on Quality Educational meetings that draw higher attendance. After our successful workday at the Keanae Arboretum in 2006 we hope to plan a MALP workday in 2007. An industry Field Trip will also be planned.
CLT Program
MALP will support any member who wishes to take the CLT test. The test is not currently available on Maui but MALP will provide assistance with travel costs and Exam Fees.
This program needs dedicated volunteers. Should you be interested in supporting this program, please contact us.
MALP Newsletters
MALP produces a newsletter three times a year that focuses on news and educational articles specific to our industry here on Maui.
MALP Lawn and Garden Fair
MALP has been hosting the Lawn and Garden Fair since 1997. The show has continued to grow each year, attracting more vendors and attendees. This is a fundraising event for MALP and we charge a small booth fee to venders. These funds are used to fund other activities of the organization such as speaker fees. The fair serves as a platform to educate the community on the value that commercial landscaping provides the island of Maui. Vendors display and sell products pertaining to the landscape and agriculture industries on Maui. Attendees learn about new products and listen to educational presentations.

On November 3rd 2007 two events will combine to create a more comprehensive celebration of Arbor Day and beautification of Maui. The Maui Association of Landscape Professionals (MALP) will partner with the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens (MNBG) to combine their efforts to create a must attend event full of educational activities and demonstrations. In addition to the annual free 1,000 tree give-away, there will be plant sales (fruit trees, succulents, natives and non-invasives), lectures, demonstrations, green industry representatives, and great food. And, Maui Invasive Species Committee (MISC) will be presenting their 2007 Malama i ka ‘Aina Award to a landscape professional that promotes and aids in the use of non-invasive plants on Maui.
Maui Nui Botanical Gardens first hosted its Arbor Day Tree Give-Away in 2003 in partnership with the DLNR Kaulunani Program, the County Department of Water Supply and Maui Electric Company. MALP’s Lawn & Gardens Fair has been a success for 10 years and for the last three years has been held at the Maui Tropical Plantation in Waikapu.
This year the organizations will be combining their efforts to create an event that will be able to answer most of Maui’s landscape, gardening and tree questions. There will be booths representing the landscape industry, tree friendly organizations and non-profits to answer questions on landscape equipment, fertilization, pests, diseases and soil testing. MALP’s goal is education and elevation of landscape practices on Maui, and MNBG Arbor Day Celebration serves to beautify our island home and help to promote the right tree in the right place.
